The Emperor Tamarin is a primate supposedly named for its similarity with the German emperor Wilhelm II. The name started as a joke, but stuck and became the official scientific name. This tamarin is found in the southwest Amazon Basin, east Peru, north Bolivia and in the west Brazilian states of Acre and Amazonas. The primate inhabits tropical rain forests, living deep in the forest and in open tree-covered areas.

The White-faced Saki is a type of New World monkey found in Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. They feed mostly on fruits, but also nuts, seeds, and insects.

Tapirs are large browsing mammals, roughly pig-like in shape, with short, prehensile snouts — able to take hold of things, especially by wrapping around them. They inhabit jungle and forest regions of South America, Central America, and Southeast Asia and considered endangered or vulnerable.

The Sun Bear is primarily found in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. They stand approximately 4 feet (1.2 meters) in length, and the smallest of the bear family. It’s often called the dog bear because of its small stature. The typical Sun Bear weighs less than 145 pounds (65 kilograms).

Hagfish are marine vertebrates, with some debate as to whether they’re strictly fish. Their unusual feeding habits and slime-producing capabilities have led to the hagfish being dubbed as the most ‘disgusting’ of all sea creatures.

The Star-nosed Mole is a small North American mole found in eastern Canada and the north-eastern United States

The Proboscis Monkey — also known as Long-nosed Monkey — is a reddish-brown arboreal Old World monkey.

The Pink Fairy Armadillo is the smallest of its species. It’s about 3.5 to 4.5 inches (90 to115 Milimeters) long excluding the tail, and pale rose or pink in color. It’s found in central Argentina inhabiting dry grasslands and sandy plains with thorn bushes and cacti. It has the ability to bury itself completely in a matter of seconds if alarmed.

The Axolotl is the most widely known of the Mexican mole salamanders. The species originates from the lake underlying Mexico City. Axolotls are used extensively in scientific research for their ability to regenerate body parts. They’re commonly kept as pets in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, and Japan.

The Aye-aye is native to Madagascar, that combines rodent-like teeth with a long, thin middle finger. Being the world’s largest nocturnal primate, It’s characterized by its unique method of finding food, tapping on trees to find grubs, then gnawing holes in the wood and inserting its elongated middle finger to pull the grubs out.

The Alpaca is a domesticated species of South American camelid derived from the wild alpacas. It resembles a sheep in appearance but larger, with a long erect neck. The Alpaca has varied colors, whereas sheep are generally bred to be white and black.

Tarsiers are primates with enormous eyes and long feet. Their feet have extremely elongated tarsus bones, which is how they were penned their name. Primarily insectivorous, they catch insects by jumping at them. They’re also known to prey on birds and snakes. As they jump from tree to tree, tarsiers can catch even birds in motion. 13 This octopus is sometimes nicknamed ‘Dumbo octopus’ due to the ear-like fins protruding from the top of its ‘head’ (actually body), resembling the ears of Walt Disney’s flying elephant Dumbo. They live at extreme depths, and are some of the rarest of the Octopoda species.

The Frill-necked Lizard — also known as the Frilled Lizard or Frilled Dragon — has been nicknamed as such due to the large ruff of skin which usually lies folded back against its head and neck. The neck frill is supported by long spines of cartilage. When the lizard is frightened, it gapes its mouth showing a bright pink or yellow lining, and the frill flares out, displaying bright orange and red scales. The frill may also aid in maintaining body temperature.

The Komondor is a livestock guardian dog breed originally from Hungary.

The Angora rabbit is a variety of domestic rabbit bred for its long, soft hair. They’re believed to have originated in Turkey, along with the Angora cat and Angora goat. The rabbits made for popular pets with French royalty in the mid 1700s, spreading to other parts of Europe by the end of the century.

The Narwhal is an Arctic aquatic mammal, one of two species of white whale — the other being the beluga whale.

The Madagascar Sucker-footed Bat, Old World Sucker-footed Bat, or Sucker-footed Bat is a species of bat in the Myzopodidae family, and prevalent to Madagascar. The Sucker-footed Bat is currently threatened by habitat loss.

The Pygmy Marmoset is a monkey native to the rainforest canopies of western Brazil, southeastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, and eastern Peru. It’s one of the smallest primates, with its body length ranging from 5.5 to 6.5 inches (14 to16 centimeters) excluding its 6 to 8 inch tail. Males weigh around 5 ounces (140 grams), and females 4.2 ounces (120 grams).

The Red Panda is mostly a herbivorous mammal, slightly larger than a domestic cat at 22 inches (55 centimeters) long. The Red Panda has semi-retractile claws and like the Giant Panda, it has a ‘false thumb’ which is actually an extension of the wrist bone. The Red Panda is native to the Himalayas in Nepal and southern China.

The Blobfish inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. Due to the inaccessibility of its habitat, it’s rarely seen by humans.

The Shoebill is a very large bird related to the storks, deriving its name from its massive shoe-shaped bill.

Sloths are medium-sized mammals that live in Central and South America, mainly in Cecropia trees.

The Yeti Crab is a crustacean discovered in 2005 in the South Pacific Ocean. Approximately 6 inches (15 centimeters) long, is noted for the silky blond setae (resembling fur) covering its thoracic legs, including the claws.

According to Mayan beliefs, the journey of the sun across the sky and the darkness of night stood for the eternal journey of human consciousness and its transformations. The sun at midday was compared to the Eagle, flying high in the sky. Then it plunges below the horizon, just as we plunge into the dark where we face our spiritual challenges and are transformed. The hidden sun was said to be Jaguar, whose spotted skin symbolized the stars glittering in the night sky. Thus, it was called the "Jaguar Sun." Jaguar is the earth father. As earth father, he presides over the sacred power in the earth and the animals who live upon it. The force that lives within the mountains, which gives them their volcanic and transformative power, is the same underworld source of power and energy as the Jaguar Sun. The Mayan word for Jaguar is IX (pronounced eesh).

                      More weird.

The Aardvark, sometimes called “antbear” is a medium-sized mammal native to Africa. The name comes from the Afrikaans/Dutch for “earth pig”, because early settlers from Europe thought it resembled a pig. More like a flying However, the Aardvark is not closely related to pigs, being placed in its own order.

The Bald Uakari, also known as the Red Uakari or Bald-headed Uakari, is a distinctive red-faced monkey found in swampy forests in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. The species is considered “near threatened” by the 2004 World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List because of hunting and the destruction of its habitat.

The Babirusa or pig-deer, Babyrousa babyrussa, is a pig-like animal native to Sulawesi and surrounding islands of Indonesia. The babirusa has usually been classified as a single species in the genus Babyrousa, but recent work suggests that there may be several species, differentiable on the basis of geography, body size, amount of body hair, and the shape of the upper canine tooth of the male. Most experts agree that babirusas are part of the pig family, and are one of the oldest living members of the family, representing a subfamily, Babyrousinae, that branched off from the warthog branch of the pig family (Subfamily Phacochoerini) during the Oligocene or early Miocene

The Binturong, also known as the Asian Bearcat, the Palawan Bearcat, or just simply the Bearcat, is neither a bear nor a cat but is a species of the family Viverridae, which includes the civets and genets. The real meaning of the original name is lost, as the local language that gave it is extinct. Its natural habitat is forest canopy, and it spends most of its time in the trees of southeast Asia, Borneo, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Palawan Island.

A hyrax is any of four species of fairly small, thickset, herbivorous mammals in the order Hyracoidea. They live in Africa and the Middle East.
Hyraxes are well-furred rotund creatures with a mere stump for a tail. They are about the size of a Corgi; most measure between about 30 and 70 cm long and weigh between 2 and 5 kg. From a distance, a hyrax could be mistaken for a very well-fed rabbit or guinea pig.

The Naked Mole Rat (Heterocephalus glaber), also known as the Sand Puppy, or Desert Mole Rat, is a burrowing rodent native to parts of East Africa and the only species currently classified in genus Heterocephalus. It is notable for its eusocial lifestyle, nearly unique among mammals, and for a highly unusual set of physical traits that enables it to thrive in a harsh, underground environment; including a lack of pain sensation in its skin, and a nearly cold-blooded metabolism.

Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis is a frog species from the Western Ghats, India. Common names for this species are Purple Frog or Pignose Frog. It was discovered in October 2003 and was found to be unique for the geographic region and was consequently initially placed in a family of its own. It was subsequently placed in a family that was earlier known only from the Seychelles island chain.

The Pygmy Marmoset (Callithrix (Cebuella) pygmaea) is a monkey native to the rainforest canopies of western Brazil, southeastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, and eastern Peru. It is one of the smallest primates, with its body length ranging from 14-16 cm (excluding the 15-20 cm tail) and the smallest monkey. Males weigh around 140 g (5 ounces), and females only 120 g (4.2 ounces).

The Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii), also referred to simply as ‘the devil’, is a carnivorous marsupial now found in the wild only in the Australian island state of Tasmania. The Tasmanian Devil is the only extant member of the genus Sarcophilus. The size of a small dog, but stocky and muscular, the Tasmanian Devil is now the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world (after the recent extinction of the Thylacine in 1936).

The Tibetan Fox, also called the Tibetan Sand Fox or simply the Sand Fox, is a species of true fox that inhabits the high Tibetan Plateau in Nepal, China, and India, up to altitudes of about 5300 m. The fox was first described by the British naturalist Brian Houghton Hodgson in 1842. It has the highest sound sensitivity of all foxes
